White Masterbatches

White masterbatches are highly used in the pigmentation of films and plastic parts because it was to impart white color, characteristic of cleanliness and hygiene, also provide opacity or coverage, preventing the contents of the containers is observed.
The pigment used in the manufacture of masterbatches white is titanium dioxide, rutile type. This pigment by high refractive index to the container imparts a high opacity.
The opacity is related mainly with two important variables: the white pigment content and the thickness of the container. The higher the pigment content and the greater the thickness, the greater the opacity. The attached graphic is the influence of pigment concentration via masterbatch and the thickness of the film.
OPACITY VARIATION OF CONCENTRATION AS WHITE MB 665-2 BL (70% TiO2), LLDPE FILM 0.5 mils
OPACITY VARIATION OF THE FILM THICKNESS, 665-2 CONCENTRATION BL, 4%
There are white masterbatches market combining titanium dioxide with some mineral fillers that act as "extenders" in order to lower the price of masterbatch. In general, these masterbatches are lower in titanium dioxide and hence lower opacity.
In the market for masterbatches are white with titanium dioxide concentration of between 40% and 70% in some cases including mineral fillers up to 30%.
As a general rule white masterbatches with high concentrations of titanium dioxide used in thin films and high opacity is required. For thick films, greater than 2 mils thick is more common to use low concentration masterbatches Titanium dioxide.
Film Type Masterbatch HIGH
concentration of TiO2 Masterbatch LOW
TiO2 concentration
High opacity films
Low film thickness of less than 1 mil
Individual dosage masterbatch
Separation of the masterbatch into the hopper
Thick Film, greater than 2 mils
Since the density of white masterbatch is greater than that of polyethylene or polypropylene, this makes it possible to present "segregation" or separation of the resin masterbatch, especially when mixtures are prepared for a long time or when placed in feed hoppers subject to vibration. In critical cases it is recommended to work with masterbatches lower concentration of titanium dioxide, which has a lower density.
