European Bioplastics Association surveyed its members, which revealed that most companies reported growth in 2009.

In some cases, the increase was considerably more than 5% over the previous year.

We interviewed 38 members of different companies, including many world leaders in the manufacture of polymers, which highlighted how it was in 2009 and expressed their expectations for this year and next.

47% of enterprises registered a growth of turnover, while another 32% managed to get at least the level and only 10% of companies recorded losses.

70% of respondents confirmed their expectations, while a quarter of the firms surveyed were unable to meet its own forecasts. The companies see a positive trend for both this year and next: In total, 80% of respondents were optimistic, with 20% of successful forecasting, 40% of good results and 20% of results excellent. Based on these expectations is expected that two-thirds of companies will increase their investments in the sector this year.

With a market share of less than one percent, the bioplastic still represents a niche product, in spite of generating high growth rates. "What is missing are the incentives for an effective stimulus program to boost the market, so companies would be better able to finance their innovations and the necessary expansion of capacity," explains Harald Kaeb, political consultant of the Association.
