Arkema and durable bioplastics
In my previous post I spoke of the lasting importance of the applications in the future of bioplastics. Suggested that it was a new step for the industry and I was politely corrected by Todd Rogers, Director of Marketing Polyamides Arkema, Arkema who explained to me that brings bioplastics market lasting almost 50 years. To correct my mistake and give you more, Mr. Rogers and I spent a while talking about renewable products Arkema, the newly created Bioplastics Council and the commercial and environmental challenges faced by the plastics industry.
Arkema Renewables
Arkema sells for more than 40 years Rilsan ® 11, a high performance polyamide. But the fact that Rilsan 11 is produced from castor oil, a renewable source, has not been a factor in marketing the product until recently I do not think that the market bioplastics request so far. The majority of our clients were concerned and more concerned about the performance. For example, if you think the engine on the market, Rilsan ® 11 is used in the fuel pipes, where the biggest concerns are safety and performance. That's always first, so that the material is from renewable sources is secondary, says Todd Rogers. Arkema is a chemical company that invoice almost 6 billion euros and production of Rilsan ® 11 may seem small in comparison to the total turnover. But is that 11 Rilsan ® polyamide is not any, as are PA6 and PA66, the common nylon and therefore the production volumes are lower. But the production of Rilsan ® 11, several thousand tonnes, which is comparable to other bioplastics currently on the market. Its price is linked to its performance and properties.
Arkema Rilsan-lamp-11 -
Rilsan ® 11 and has another advantage is that it is 100% from natural sources are other materials with which we compete, but none is contained in our 11 Rilsan ®. The only reason that is not really 100% renewable additives that are added to the polymer. Arkema produces 2 different products under the brand name of Rilsan ®: 11 Rilsan ® One is renewable, and another 12 Rilsan ®, coming from oil. However, T. Rogers says that the rapidly polyamide 12 is a secondary business for Arkema is used when the performance of the polymer is not as critical and the client needs a tighter cost. The PA11 is a renewable high-performance, which is very exciting for us. There is a small hole in the market for applications that really need PA11. Has a high chemical resistance, high flexibility and withstand higher temperatures.
Arkema sells other renewable 2-containing polymers: Pebax ® and Rilsan Clear Rnew Rilsan ® Clear Rnew GE350 also has a 50% renewable content and is completely transparent, and offer good performance. Rilsan ® Clear is a high ductility, chemical resistance and excellent physical properties in general. Obviously the price is higher than other transparent polymers such as PMMA or PC. It is used in eyeglasses and sports equipment. The product line includes Pebax ® Rnew copolymers of PA11 and a malleable segment from the oil-not the first time that Pebax ® Rnew mentioned in mundomaterial, please see more information in my post about renewable TPES.
Atomic RenuLos renewable Arkema products have been traditionally used in applications with high technical requirements, such as engine components, electronic, or submarine gas pipelines and oil. The question I was around the head, if Arkema has been a growth in demand for renewable products lately Yes, definitely. Some of the most notable examples are found in the market for sports equipment. For example, in ski boots or sneakers that is used in the Pebax ® Rnew. Both applications are used before Pebax ® from oil. ATOMIC, a leader in the development and production of ski and snowboard equipment, achieved through his boots Aromic Renu, Eco Responsibility Award at ISPO, the largest ski world, in Munich. There are some examples where we see people from replacing Pebax ® Pebax Rnew ® oil, renewable sources. This confirms my view that bioplastics are sold well in applications where consumers have more power, since in these cases the fact of material that can become more sustainable in a critical factor when choosing between two products. In this way, becoming a decisive factor in buying, it is easier to justify the higher prices of bioplastics. Of course, the fact that the products are in Arkema goggles Michael Phelps or Bolt usaina the sport may have something to do with the success of its products in the sporting goods.
11 Rilsan ® and Pebax ® Rnew from the castor oil, which does not compete with food resources because it is grown in arid areas. Arkema is not currently involved in oil production or the cultivation of castor beans, although it was in the past. Today Arkema buys the oil on the open market. The largest producer of castor oil are India, China and Brazil. In my opinion the fact that castor oil is so far from Marseilles, where it is processed to obtain the monomer does not help especially to reduce their environmental impact-The polymer itself is produced in several places: in the United States, in France and China. By having several plant polymerization, we can reduce emissions of CO and CO2 produced during transportation to serve our customers locally. I think it would be unrealistic to produce castor oil in Europe or United States, for reasons of cost, "says T. Rogers.
The total of the corporation is committed to develop more renewable products, not only but also bioplástios biochemicals. Arkema is considering other renewable sources besides castor oil and its commitment to renewable resources can be summarized in this quotation from T. Le Hénaff, President of Arkema:
Arkema wants 10% of its profits come from renewable products in 2010
Bioplastics Council
The Society of the Plastics Industry, SPI has recently established the Bioplastics Council. Its founding members are all producers of bioplastics or is scheduled to start production soon. It's Arkema, DuPont, Telles, BASF (Ecoflex) and Cereplast NatureWorks, of course. 6 companies have joined forces under the umbrella of SPI, having as main objective to educate the public at all levels of the chain from consumers to plastic processors. Todd Rogers gives details of some of the actions proposed by the Bioplastics Council:
Bioplastics The Council will have a section in the NPE, the United States, this panel and one año.Tendremos talks with members of the bioplastics industry to encourage everyone to learn more about it. At year-end draw a guide for industry that will help understand what providers bioplastics should attract customers, depending on your needs: if you want a durable bioplastics should be directed to Arkema, if you want a bioplastics for packaging, they can go to any of other members. This guide should also help to understand the extent of market and industry of bioplastics.
The Bioplastics Councils recently met with the Department of Agriculture of the United States, USDA, to discuss possible ways of collaboration. We have also contacted the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, FTC, which is in responble United States to check the veracity of the ads. There are many people who are making statements and giving information that is false. The only way to combat this is to educate the public and professionals in the technical specifications and type of evidence necessary to maintain the clean and without contamination of lies.
T Rogers asked if the Bioplastics Council has a definite position with regard to establishing a minimum content for a polymer that can be called bioplastics, a quite debated topic in the industry I think that the understanding we have reached is that any percentage of renewable content, however small, is a step in the right direction. That said, we must ensure that we are sincere and honest, so we have taken a firm position in favor of standards such as ASTM D6866, which measures the amount of organic content in a product. If your product is less than 5% but has been measured by this standard, then let the market decide whether it is sufficient or not. If and when that number is greater than zero and has been measured fairly clear answer T. Rogers.
After reading enough about renewable Arkema products and talk with Todd Rogers, I am quite convinced that bioplastics are more than ready to be used in durable applications. Rilsan ® 11 is 100% renewable, but also has an ample performance tested over the years. Arkema completes its offer with two other polymers with renewable content, aims to increase its turnover derived from renewables, reaching 10% in 2010 and is an active member of the Bioplastics Council. It is clear that the growth potential is there to be exploited, and one can only wonder where bioplastics in 10 years.
