It is one of the few directors of public companies in the Basque Country was reappointed after the arrival of the PSE to Ajuria Enea. The professional profile of Jose Ignacio Hormaeche was instrumental in the decision of the new Executive, who offered him the opportunity to stay ahead of the Basque Energy. The recognition that the work he had done until then was the right and the support obtained from the Minister of Industry to continue with the projects that's ongoing stresses, were the main reasons that led him to accept. One such initiative was the development of electric car, an idea that the autonomous government has decided to consider "strategic" and which have already taken some steps, such as creating a joint venture with Repsol to build an experimental network of supply and recharge these vehicles.
- Why did you decide on the EVE devote part of their efforts to something that is still a future project, as the electric car?
"It was about a year ago and came within a monitoring process issues we have with regularity. It was because of technological developments that began to take the batteries when we decided it was good to take positions. The Basque Country also has the right features to develop a network of recharging as we have raised with Repsol. The three capitals are at a distance that falls within the margin of autonomy of an electric car and the villages are not isolated, they have continuity. It is a perfect structure for this development.
Start reverse
- What do you think companies can make Basque the Electric Car?
"Much. Clearly, not a business in the short term, but also that we have businesses and professionals capable of developing such technology. We have pushed the idea through the cluster of energy companies and automotive and the fact that the FSC will make a commitment to this theme may lead companies to meet the challenge.
- Are not you afraid that this project will lose credibility with the failures in the past with the idea of installing a vehicle assembly plant?
"In this case we have started to reverse. We do not pursue the large vehicle manufacturing plant or are thinking of the multinational that comes to solving the problems of our industry. If you ever come to manufacture electric vehicles in Euskadi would be the pinnacle, the icing, but what we seek now is to take positions in developing a product that can succeed.
- Is the EVE industrial project for this term?
"The electric car development is our project for the next decade. It is a long term bet. One term, I fear, is a short time.
Supported Projects
"It's funny that you have reached an agreement with Repsol to develop a network of recharging a Basque company, Iberdrola, has done something similar, but with the Government of the Comunidad Valenciana.
"We long ago we discussed our idea and we wanted to develop in the Energy Cluster, which is present Iberdrola. They knew, therefore, we wanted to do, but did not propose anything. However, the Repsol group did accept the challenge. But it must be seen as something positive that there are other developments. That will encourage supply.
-To develop an electric car, "endangering biofuels? It is another technology that you have supported.
"No, I do not. The EU is expected that by 2020 10% of fuel consumed in transportation will be biofuel. For that same year, the forecast is that the electric vehicle is 10% of total sales of automobiles. It will damage both technologies and any potential to reduce oil dependence is good. Besides, you never thought biofuels were a global solution to completely replace petroleum.
"In 2010 the FSC will have the opportunity to sell 30% stake it has in Naturgas. The Government has already announced its desire to execute the sale.
"Yes, and decisions should be taken before the summer. It is possible that the Government retain a portion of their shares and remain as shareholders of the company.
The waves, too
"The Minister of Economy has acknowledged that public funds will enter a very substantial amount with the sale. What would like to dedicate these resources or at least those who remain in EVE?
"The development of infrastructure to recharge electric car is our priority. There are other projects that we would have an impact, as is the utilization of wave energy, underground exploration to identify gas reserves and the momentum of the 'ESCOs', companies dedicated to providing services to residential areas.
"And, after the institutional mess that is organized, do you think will be possible to install some more wind farm in Euskadi?
"I hope so. I am a wind so convinced that I even like the aesthetics of wind turbines. The Government, councils and Eudel are working on a deal to give a solution to those already in the pipeline. I hope that goes well and we have more capacity installed in the Basque Country.
