We have exciting opportunities for lab-based medicinal chemists keen to work on FBDD in close collaboration with computational chemistry, structural biology, biology and DMPK scientists. Candidates should be highly rigorous scientifically, and able to challenge and stimulate colleagues. An excellent knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry, alongside a proven track record of practical experience, is required. Applications are welcome from candidates recently qualified at PhD level as well as medicinal chemists with industrial experience. Some of the positions are permanent and some are for 2 year fixed term contracts depending on qualifications and experience.

Principal Responsibilities

• Design and synthesis of target molecules within drug discovery projects, with an emphasis on structure-based drug design and state of the art synthesis methodology
• Contribute to the advancement of FBDD technology and methodology within the Department
• Support the safe day to day running of Astex’s chemistry laboratories
• Promote cross disciplinary interactions

Requirements

• PhD in synthetic organic chemistry with demonstrated expertise in delivering target molecules
• Outstanding publication record in high impact journals

As a Laboratory Head in Process Chemistry you will be working in the department “Process Chemistry & Catalysis” within “Small Molecules Technical Development”.

"Global Technical Development" (PTD) is an organization of over two thousand people globally that are integral for the mission of Roche to develop meaningful medicines for patients. The mandate of the group is, to reliably deliver the pipeline and supply quality products to patients. “Small Molecules Technical Development” (PTDC) brings a broad range of experience across drug substance (DS), drug product (DP), analytical sciences and manufacturing S&T, and collaborates closely with key partners in the departments Research and Early Development (pRED / gRED), commercial manufacturing (PTC) and PTD. PTDC is responsible for late stage technical development of our small molecules pipeline, manufacture of DS and DP for clinical studies and Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) across our small molecules manufacturing network.

As a Laboratory Head in Process Chemistry, you will lead a process chemistry lab with 2 to 4 associates responsible for synthesis design and Process Research & Development of small molecules from entry into human through transfer to commercial manufacturing.

Key responsibilities are:

• Responsibility for a process chemistry laboratory including direct leadership of 2-4 team members
• Development of chemical processes suitable for manufacturing pharmaceutical active substances in consistent and high quality. The processes will be scalable and robust and cover all aspects of SHE, quality and cost efficiency
• As a chemical project leader, you will be coordinating all activities within Technical Development to guarantee the timely supply of high quality drug substance
• Working within an interdisciplinary team of synthetic, analytical and production chemists as well as process safety experts and engineers
• Interaction with our partners from technical regulatory, quality assurance and formulation development in an international environment
• Transfer of new development projects from research, for the subsequent process development for clinical supplies – and, ultimately, for the successful transfer of robust manufacturing processes to commercial production
• Establish and foster good communication with all partners in the areas of quality assurance, regulatory, and commercial manufacturing
• Preparation and review of scientific documentation for regulatory submissions

What you bring:

• PhD degree in organic chemistry
• Minimum 3 years of experience in process research & development and scale-up of small molecules
• Publications in scientific literature and patents
• Leadership experience in small to medium-sized project teams
• Experience in writing and/or reviewing documentation for manufacturing and regulatory submissions
• Experience in the pharmaceutical industry, design of experiments, data science, and laboratory automation would be an advantage
• Real passion for scientific and technical innovation
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and coordination skills
• Proficient in English, knowledge of German is an advantage

Mansioni

• Progettazione di circuiti microfluidici.
