The Government of Qatar reported its first two new cases of influenza, two foreign children

The government of Qatar announced today the first two cases of influenza A (H1N1) detected in this country, two foreign children who had recently visited United States and Austria, respectively.

The two children who showed symptoms of influenza A new arrival in Qatar, are receiving treatment and are recovering, said Minister of Health Abdullah Al Qahtani, in a statement obtained by the Qatar News Agency.

The first case corrresponde a child two years of New Zealand who arrived last Saturday with his family from Austria, and the U.S. also is a child of two years who came from New York on Sunday with a stopover in Bangladesh, the minister added.

Four other Persian Gulf countries-Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain, have detected cases of influenza A (H1N1) in their respective territories.

HBCD is Hexabromocyclododecane. Hexabromocyclododecane has highly brominated and excellent performance in lower loading and reduced effect on polymer properties. It is an additive flame retardant used in a wide range of polymers as well as PP fibres, PS resin, textiles, adhesives and coatings. It is particularly recommended for styrene based systems such as EPS.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) have routinely been added to consumer products for several decades in a successful effort to reduce fire-related injury and property damage. Recently, concern for this emerging class of chemicals has risen because of the occurrence of several classes of BFRs in the environment and in human biota. The widespread production and use of BFRs ; strong evidence of increasing contamination of the environment, wildlife, and people ; and limited knowledge of potential effects heighten the importance of identifying emerging issues associated with the use of BFRs. In this article, we briefly review scientific issues associated with the use of tetrabromobisphenol A, hexabromocyclododecane, and three commercial mixtures of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and discuss data gaps. Overall, the toxicology database is very limited ; the current literature is incomplete and often conflicting. Available data, however, raise concern over the use of certain classes of brominated flame retardants.
