The World Health Organization (WHO) has assured that no data showing a sustained infection of the new flu outside of North America, where the most affected countries (Mexico and United States) by the virus.

"We have no evidence of a sustained infection in communities outside of Northern America," said the director of Global Alert and Response disease, Michael Ryan.

At present, the level of pandemic alert from the WHO is located at 5 on a scale of 6. Ryan explained that the move to stage 6 indicate that the new type of flu has spread geographically, and not necessarily that it is more serious.

"At this point, still considering an imminent pandemic, because there is a spread of the disease. In this situation we must expect to reach the highest level of alert, but hopefully not have to resort to this measure," he said.

Virus unpredictable

In relation to comments made by scientific institutions argue that the flu virus is less serious as they thought, Ryan said that if it did, "would be the happiest man on earth," but recalled the type of virus is "very, very unpredictable."

Ryan has warned that it would be "unwise" to believe that there is no greater danger, because when an animal virus circulating among humans tend to mutate and combine with other genetic material, so it is better to remain alert.

The expert noted that the WHO will send more than two million treatment courses of antiviral drugs to poor countries to help prepare them for transmission of the virus, which could bring an even greater danger to patients who are HIV positive.
